Countywide Open Burning Ban in Effect Through August 31, 2010

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office reminds citizens that open burning is prohibited countywide from June 1 through August 31, 2010. This regulation also applies to the seven incorporated towns within Loudoun County.

The regulation on open burning is based upon air quality standards developed by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and is enforced locally by the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office. Bonfires and the burning of materials normally permissible, mainly leaves, grass and brush, associated with agricultural needs, is prohibited during this period. The uses of outside barbeque grills, chimineas, covered outdoor fireplace devices and campfires are not affected by this ban.

Citizens are advised that violations of the open burning regulations are a Class 1 misdemeanor under the Loudoun County Fire Prevention Code. Convictions may result in a fine of up to $2,500.00 and up to one year in jail.

For further information or questions regarding the open air burning restrictions, contact the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office at 703-737-8600. Information is also available at www.loudoun.gov/firemarshal.
