Gas leaks in Sterling and Northern Virginia
Starting at approximately 1pm on Saturday, September 2nd units from from Sterling, Fairfax County (Herndon and Reston), Ashburn, Arcola, and Dulles Airport began responding to numerous gas leaks throughout the Sterling area. An equipment malfunction put too much mercaptan, the additive that gives natural gas its smell, into the system. At last count there have been 217 calls handled by the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue system, mostly in the Sterling area.
The Sterling Volunteer Fire Company would like to thank all the companies and personnel who helped out. A special thanks to the volunteers of Engine 822 (Springfield) for covering Sterling for 8 hours, starting at midnight.
