On Saturday, January 26th, the members, family, and friends of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company gathered for our annual banquet. This is a great time for members, their families, and friends of the department to get together for a fun evening. It also serves as the installation ceremony for the following year’s company officers. This year the oath of office was given by Representative Frank Wolf.
It’s also a time for us to recognize the continued work and dedication of our membership and the support of their families. This year the company recognized Danielle Bischoff and Dave Carter as Associate members of the Year, Firefighter Corey Burke as Recruit of the Year, Technician Andy Brown as Firefighter of the Year, and Captain Keith Firmin as Officer of the Year.
In a special ceremony the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company dedicated our new canteen unit to longtime member, friend, and chaplain Charlie Grant. The plaque to be mounted on the canteen reads:
This vehicle is dedicated to Chaplain Charles Grant for his many years of continuous and dedicated service to the SVFD.
The Sterling Volunteer Fire Company would also like to thank those from Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company, Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company, and the Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department for serving the community of Sterling by staffing our stations while we enjoyed the banquet.
The oath of office was administered by Representative Frank Wolf

At approximately 0135 hours Engines 618, 611, 404 (Fairfax – Herndon), and 606 (Ashburn), TowerLadders 611 and 606 (Ashburn), Rescues 439 (Fairfax -Northpoint) and 615 (Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad), A25-3 (SVRS), Captain 18, AFC-18, and Chief-11 responded for the reported structure fire on Sugarland Run Drive. E618 arrived to find fire showing through the roof of the end unit of a one story strip shopping center . E611 TL611, and Captain 18 arrived shortly thereafter. Due to the heavy fire conditions, units initiated a defensive attack using hand lines, a deck gun, and aerial master streams. A second alarm was requested bringing additional units from Ashburn and Fairfax County. Units were able to hold the fire to the unit of origin with only minor damage (mostly smoke and heat) to the neighboring store. This was accomplished using safe and sound basic firefighting tactics. Everyone performed their jobs in a safe and efficient manner. There were quite a few tired faces and sore muscles this morning, but no injuries.
Crews had fire through the roof upon arrival.
Damage was contained mostly to the unit where the fire started
