September 19 1650hrs: The Day Crew at Station 11 was dispatched to investigate a suspicious substance found near the Holiday Inn. After some initial tests, the substance was thought to be worth a serious looking at. The area was roped off and Sterling Firefighters (ENG611 and HazMat Support 618) were joined by Loudoun Sheriffs Deputies, Sterling Rescue and HazMat crews from Loudoun (South Riding) and Dulles Airport. Ultimately, the material was determined not to pose a hazard and all units returned to service.

Saturday, September 6: By the time that Tropical Storm Hanna had reached Sterling, most of its energy was gone. Nevertheless, it still gave us about 24 hours of solid rain. As a result, there were areas of high water, flooded basements and flash flooding.
Some of the home flooding was caused by poorly maintained sump pumps or clogged drains. Homeowners should put these items on their pre-storm home checklist.
The most significant event occurred in the area of Route 606 and Cedar Green Road. There, Indian Creek escaped its banks and over flooded Cedar Green Road. At least three vehicles entered the high water and became stranded and it was determined that area behind the flooding was to be evacuated. The road was then closed until the water went back down.
