  4. You know have a warm spot in our hearts and we are ever grateful to you for the job that you do, your willingness to do it, and the excellent way you perform it. I don’t know what we or the community would do without you. Even tho you take little credit, you did a fantastic job of calming both of us during a horrific episode of the implantable defibrillator firing off 16 shots. Thank God you came and transported my husband. We can’t explain the relief we felt having you there! May God bless and reward all of you!

  6. While we Sterling residents certainly do appreciate the great work you guys have being doing, I would like to know if there is any procedure in place as far as the use of siren is concerned. There have been numerous occasions, as recent as today, when siren from your emergency vehicles seem to be running non-stop in the middle of the night on south Cascades Parkway which is next to several residential neighborhoods. If there is no or minimal traffic, especially in the middle of the night, using emergency flashlights alone would not be still sufficient? Must siren be used at all time? And with the kind of loud volume? You guys are doing excellent job, but please, can you also put some thoughts on the use of siren? Thanks!!!

  13. Cascades Parkway South has been turned into almost a war zone by you guys with your nonstop siren every few hours on some weekends. Please leave us some peace. There are many residential homes along the parkway. Even D.C. isn’t like this. Learn from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Their emergency teams handle siren in their neighborhood with much, much less disturbance than you guys do here. If you need to train your new volunteers better, please do so.

Editors note: The career staff have their own web sites, with pictures and everything. You’ll find the links to the right in the Links section. There are also a few posts, at least one with photos, of the career staff in the archives.

  16. I have a question? Given that I own a very small Geo Metro, where I am supposed to put all of the items you mention for my “Winter Driving Kit”?

Editor: Contact the LCSO for further information. Have you considered a car top carrier?

Also, I thought you were a fire department, don’t you go to fires?

    Editor: Only when we’re called.

  17. Please accept my deepest condolences on the death of Curt Selbert. What a guy!! I was fortune to have know him from 1982 thru 1985 when I was a member of Co 11/18. Curt was as you said gregarious and a great jokester. He was also very loyal, dedicated and a hard worked. He always had his two cents to throw into a discussion or issue, but once the decision was made he supported it to the max. I will always remember Curt for being the big, tough, country guy with a heart as big as all outdoors. I am shocked and upset to hear of his death. May God watch over him and take care of him.

  24. I ran across this site after talking to my son the other day. I’m a former member of the SVFD, serving from 1974 – 1986. Spent a few years as Fire Chief and loved all my experiences with the gang. I’m now a semi-retired Safety Consultant living in Sumter SC. Rosie and I travel a great deal back and forth to Dallas to see our sons and their families. We also spend a lot of time traveling all over the Southeast in our airplane. If any of the oldtimers (or current members) want to talk, feel free to contact me via email at AA1APilot@hotmail.com
